Here I Am, Lord

Here I Am, Lord is the title of a great hymn in our United Methodist Hymnal. The theme for this wonderful hymn came from the Book of Isaiah chapter 6:8 and was put to words and music by Dan Schutte in 1981.

This Isaiah text focuses on how God is calling Isaiah to be his prophet and messenger to his chosen people. However, Isaiah recognizes his uncleanliness before God and the hopelessness of measuring up to God's standard of holiness. Isaiah's sins are forgiven when his lips are touched by a burning coal; however, it wasn't the burning coal that cleansed him, but God. In response to God's forgiveness of his sins, Isaiah submits himself entirely to God's service. No matter how difficult his task would be, Isaiah said, "Here I am. Send me!"

Just like Isaiah before you accept God's calling to speak for him to those around you, you must be cleansed as Isaiah was, by confessing your sins and submitting to God's control. This cleansing may be painful, but you must be cleaned so you can truly represent God, who is pure and holy. You have to recognize you are powerless and inadequate to do anything of lasting value without God. Once you recognize this and submit totally to God, all things are possible.

When God calls you, will you say, "Here I am. Send me!"? Or will you allow your doubts, fears and sinfulness to keep you from serving the God who loves you beyond your very understanding

Blessings,
Chuck

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A METHODIST?

What does the Methodist Church believe about Scripture? What is Wesley's Quadrilateral? How did the Methodist Church come about? These are some of the topics we will explore in our new Tuesday morning, 9:00 am and Tuesday evening, 7:00 pm study at the church. This study will begin September 7, 2010 and each session will last an hour. Please plan on joining us to enhance your understanding of the United Methodist Church.

I would like First United Methodist Church of Rusk to start our own "Feed the Hungry" campaign. If each of us will bring in one item each Sunday it would go along way in feeding the hungry. Our new "Feed the Hungry" campaign will begin on Sunday, September 12th and the food item for that Sunday is canned Tuna. On September 19th the food item will be Peanut Butter and on September 26th it will be canned vegetables. I am looking for someone to take charge of this program beginning in October. Please be in prayer about leading this worthwhile program. It won't take a lot of time or energy and I know this person will be blessed.

May the sun shine warm upon your face.
May the rain fall soft upon your field;
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
